First Lady Nancy Freudenthal was in Sundance today.  She spent her afternoon walking around downtown businesses with her daughter Katie.  At the Sundance Times, the two learned about the old archived papers and their rich telling of history in the area.  They were fortunate enough to see one of the albums and read some articles from an early 1900’s edition.  Both Nancy and Katie enjoyed the brief history lesson!   After reading the old paper, they listened to the concerns of the people at the Sundance Times and took notes to take back to the governor.

John Shoffstall joined the ladies to continue their tour. The three went into several business and restaurants to say hello.  The County Courthouse was their last stop, then it was time to get back on the road again!

Governor Dave Freudenthal, First Lady Nancy, and their daughters visited Crook County for a campaign event on a warm July evening.  The event was at Mike and Becky Easley’s house and many people came by to eat and chat with the governor for a while. The food was beautifully laid out and delicious! There was much to munch on, from meatballs to chocolate covered strawberries to parmesan breadsticks and no one was able to resist the delicious food. The Governor was conveniently found near the food table where many of his conversations took place. People discussed the Hathaway Scholarship Program, the removal of the sales tax on farm equipment and food in the past few years, managing energy development in ways that protect our way of life, and – unfortunately – the Thorn Complex Fire which was raging that day.

The next morning the Governor and First Lady attended the opening of the Devil's Tower Golf Course in Hulett. Both reported the stunning beauty of the area and their hope that the golf course would become a national destination. From the golf course, the two visited the incident command center the Thorn Complex Fires. The smoke was so dense during the drive that they couldn’t even make out Devil’s Tower. The Governor commented: “The fire is not contained, but the folks are working incredibly hard to gain some advantage. The difficulty is both the terrain along with the weather circumstances, which are reaching 100 degrees each day with a relative humidity of less than 10 percent. So these are difficult conditions for people fighting the fires.” Governor Dave commended the efforts of the firefighters and volunteers in their dangerous work and promised to pray for their safety and ask others to do the same.
